I want to get my teeth whitened... pain involved?

..I have VERY sensitive teeth. Should I try an over the counter item such as Crest Whitestrips, or go to my dentist for a professional treatment such as Zoom? What are the pain levels involved with each of those treatments?

I want to get my teeth whitened... pain involved?
No pain at all
Reply:I also have very sesitive teeth, and I tried the Crest white strips, but they hurt my teeth and gums. I would go to the denist and ask him/her.
Reply:Some. Includes the dentist bar to hold open your mouth and the chemicals sting the gums. It's not a straight bar but a round plastic type piece that is very annoying. Be sure and get your lips in shape b4 no chapped lips or they bleed :( The lazer does not include the chemicals but still an appliance to keep your mouth open and u sit for awhile like that.

Strips? I hear they burn the gums too.
Reply:i do suggest the crest whitestrips or to the dentist
Reply:I have had zoom Whitening and it was not pain-full as such I had what is called zingers like I had bitten in to ice cream but it was over and done with very quick I have them on and off of about 4 hours I just took to painkillers went to bed the next morning teeth were back to normal, As if you have very sensitive teeth you should go to your dentist before you think about any whitening as you could be brushing to hard and need little filling up by you gum,
Reply:crest whitestrips are also made for sensitive teeth.

the dentist's lasers and maybe even shots could be painful. do it yourself first and if all else falls try plan b. (dentist)
Reply:If you already have sensitive teeth whitening will probably cause more intense sensitivity. There are some things you can do. 1. Stick to milder whiteners b/c they won't cause as much sensitivity. Try over the counter white strips first and see if the results are enough for you. 2. Do some prep before whitening your teeth. If you can see your hygienist and get your teeth cleaned and have a professional fluoride treatment done. This will help with the most with the sensitivity. If you can't see your dentist, begin using sensitive toothpaste daily about 2-4 weeks before whitening as well as daily fluoride rinses. This will help to block off the sensitivity nerves. With the sensitive toothpaste, brush but at least 1 time a day just spit and don't rinse after brushing you will rinse the sensitivity ingredient off, wait 30 minutes to eat or drink, if you have a particularly sensitive are you can rub a little there after you finish brushing. Buy a fluoride rinse from the store 1 time a day swish, spit, no rinsing, eating, or drinking for 30 minutes. After doing this try the whitestrips, keep doing this routine along with the whitening strips and take a day off the whitening if it gets too sensitive.

PS the zoom or professional whitening would probably send you through the roof sensitive
Reply:I just got the Zoom! done yesterday and it worked soo well. It was alittle painful but I when I woke up this morning it was gone %26amp; my teeth looked great! I tried the white strips before the zoom and they didnt work for me.

Can the removal of wisdom teeth cause pain in the temples?

Hey, I just had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed 2 days ago, and all of the sudden I have pain in the temples. It feels like intense pressure, is this normal?

Can the removal of wisdom teeth cause pain in the temples?
I would simply ask the dentist,..second opinion would go to my physician
Reply:I would contact the dental surgeon or your family doctor...it may be a side effect of the surgery, but I personally didn't experience that after having mine out. It's best to make sure
Reply:It could be the injection sites - it certainly wouldn't hurt to call the doctor and just let them know your symptoms. If they are concerned, they'll ask you to come in.

All 4 impacted wisdom teeth pulled... Pain not subsiding.?

I had all 4 of my impacted wisdom teeth pulled about....4 or 5 days ago. Of course everytime I take the perscribed pain meds I conk out for about 3 hours. I have plenty more of the medications, but the right side of my mouth is killing me, even WITH the pain medications.

I'm worried that I might have dry socket. Also- why shouldn't you drink liquids with a straw? How does that affect the healing process?

All 4 impacted wisdom teeth pulled... Pain not subsiding.?
Hello!

As an oral surgeons daughter I have to say I have plenty of experience in this subject!!

I would, as the other person said, see your oral surgeon at your earliest convenience. You should have made a follow up appointment so he/she can see how the stitches are holding up etc. After the surgery did you try keeping ice on it 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off? You also dont have to use the prescribed pain meds if you dont want to conk out-- you can use advil or tylenol.

Did your Dr. prescribe you an oral rinse, such as peridex? (Its clorahexidine rinse). It is important to rinse out with warm salt water (not too hard) to clean the wound.

Lastly, if you are worried you have a dry socket I would see the Doc as well. Basically when you get your teeth out there is a hole where the tooth used to be and, as part of the healing process, a blood clot forms. A dry socket is when the blood clot falls out of the hole and it can be painful (I had one).

The reason you dont want to drink through a straw or smoke cigarettes after wisdom tooth extraction is because the vacuum you create with the suction can contribute to pulling the blood clot out and thus creating a dry socket. I wouldnt drink with a straw if you can avoid it.

Lastly, are you on birth control? Women who are taking birth control are more likely to develop a dry socket.

In the event that you do have a dry socket what your doctor will most likely do is put some fibers down into the hole so that an infection doesnt happen and he will have you flush out the whole with a syringe of water. you dont want food to get caught in the hole.

I hope you feel better and that this helps. Best of luck.
Reply:You need to see your dentist or oral surgeon ASAP to make sure you don't have an infection. Any pain should've dissipated by now.
Reply:drinking liquids through a straw can cause dry sockets....and if the pain is really severe and its not subsiding then id contact the doctor that removed them.
Reply:you should call the dentist/oral surgeon for advice.

you have blood clots in the holes where the teeth were. If you drink out of a straw, that can dislodge the blood clot, which creates a dry socket. Which hurts.
Reply:As drinking liquids with a straw involves sucking, this suction can actually draw out blood or loosen your stitches. So it's definitely good to avoid the straw for a bit longer, and sip those drinks. :)

I had all four fully impacted wisdom teeth surgically removed when I was 18, and I was still feeling pain after a week. However, if your pain is extreme and the swelling isn't going down at all, I'd definitely stop back into your dentist's office for a visit.

Hope you feel better soon!
Reply:I just got mine out two weeks ago. Sounds like a dry socket, i know because i got one. Call you dentist asap believe me the pain wont go away
Reply:the dosage on the bottle is a suggested dose! you probably have a high tolerance to the pain meds? you can take a little more or have a drink!
Reply:You don't want to suck with a straw because it will remove the blood clots from the gums and they will start to bleed again. The pain usually last a week sometimes a little longer. Remember they were impacted so they had to dig them out. If you start with fever or redness in the jaw area see you dentist right away it could be an infection or if for some reason you can not open your mouth at all.
Reply:If you had your wisdom teeth pulled out 5 days ago and you're still experiencing bad pains you might want to go back to the dentist and make sure you don't have an infection. I've had mine pulled, two of them were very deep, the pain and swelling were pretty much gone by day 3 or 4. They say you shouldn't drink from a straw, because when you suck you pull on the muscles in the back of your mouth this can cause the healing process to take longer or even cause damage.
Reply:If you are still having pain 5 days after you had them pulled then something is not right and you need to see the surgen that pulled your teeht like yesterday chop chop don't waste any time
Reply:It does sound like you have a dry socket. Call the doctor that did the extractions and explain the problem. They will probably get you back in and pack the extraction site. This will help you feel better.

You shouldn't drink through a straw for 24 to 48 hours after b/c the vacuum caused in your mouth when you drink through a straw can cause the blood clot that had begun for healing to be pulled out leaving an open socket and causing a dry socket.

My best advise is call the doctor and get an appointment.
Reply:Prescription pain meds should take care of any pain you have from the procedure. If they're not working, you need to go back to the doctor immediately; it's very likely a dry socket or infection and you need treatment so it doesn't get worse.
Reply:You probably do have a dry socket. Pain killers and an ice pack are really the only things to help the pain and of course when you're asleep thats not a real issue. It's better not to drink out a straw because of the difference in action or movement that the fluids take when ingested. When you don't use a straw the liquid is more likely to flow over the socket and sort of cleanse it, if you will. The straw will prevent that somewhat, and if you don't use the wash you were given you just have an open wound in practically stagnant environment full of bacteria. Anyway you just want to keep it clean and free from debris.
Reply:Hi I'm a dental assistant! If the pain is the same or getting worse, you probably do have dry socket and you should go back to the dentist, the pain medication will not heal it up, they will have to put some gel foam and medication inside the socket for it to heal.

The reason you shouldn't use a straw is b/c of the sucking action.

You need a blood clot to form in the socket for it to heal, the sucking action from the straw can pull the blood clot out, causing dry socket! You should also not spit, or smoke or any other kind of sucking action.

Hope that helps

After wisdom teeth surgery pain?

I had my wisdom teeth out january 17th, so its been about 3 weeks, and my other infront of where they were extracted still hurt. Its like a throbbing sensation and pain when i bite down, is this normal, and should i get this checked out? Is there something wrong with my other teeth?

After wisdom teeth surgery pain?
Get a bottle of Listerine, (Not the cheep stuff... Get the name brand Blue stuff!) Water it down by HALF, and use it as often as every half an hour...

OR

Mix Epsom Salts and Table Salt in water and use it like mouth wash...

You need to see your dentist... You REALLY do... 3 weeks is a long time past when it should have stopped...

Is it inflamed? Is there swelling that is noticible through the cheek? Do you have a fever? (Even a SLIGHT fever?)

If it is infected then it is bad and you need to use the listerine more then ever... But if it isn't inflamed you got some time...
Reply:3 weeks sounds like a long time for your mouth to be sore. You may have what is called "dry socket". I think that the dentist will need to check your mouth to be sure what it is.
Reply:Usually the pain is supposed to go away within the first 2 weeks. Its really strange that yours is longer but it will probably go away. Try washing out your mouth with saltwater and maybe having it checked out by a dentist or doctor. You probably are in healing process. Perhaps the dentist had the root snap when he pulled you tooth, sometimes that happens.
Reply:It could be an infection. A month after having all four of my wisdom teeth cut out, one of the areas became infected. I first went to my regular dentist and he prescribed an antibiotic and pain killer then sent me to the dentist that did my surgery, who flushed out the infection and stuck medicated gauze near the infection. I had to go back to him a few more times after that but the infection and pain went away.

4 impacted wisdom teeth throbbing pain loose stitches?

Had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed at 2 pm on Wednesday (Dec. 13). The pain was manageable the first day, and most of the second. I followed my instructions, used gauze and iced my cheeks often.

My face is swollen and, last night, I awoke to a horrible pain on the upper, right side of my mouth. The stitches, which are absorbable, have come loose on the top, I think. The pain fades in and out. The swelling around my face has increased, and my cheeks are often very hot. I'm hungry, but haven't been able to eat because my jaw hurts and I'm afraid of disturbing the clotting process. I was feeling better this afternoon, so I ate some pudding then fell asleep. When I awoke, my shirt was bloody and I was in terrible pain. I used gauze and it seems to have slowed.

Do I have a dry socket, or is this normal? I know this is technically the third day of recovery, so do I need to relax for a while? I'm pretty upset right now.

Thanks in advance for any advice. I appreciate it.

4 impacted wisdom teeth throbbing pain loose stitches?
You should call your dentist and let them know your symptoms. They may want to have a look. You may have been bleeding due to the loose stitch you describe but there is the possibility of a dry socket as well, you need the diagnosis of a dentist. If it is a dry socket they will need to treat that. You should take some ibuprofen to help with the swelling, it is a pain killer but it also has some anti-inflammatory qualities.
Reply:Do you have infection? You may need an antibiotic as well as pain reliever.
Reply:Sounds like a possible infection. Seek medical help

also have you drank liquid food.. thats what you should still be doing i was on Liquids for 3 days
Reply:Drinks that are heavy sugared non carbonated drinks, helps close the wound up, clots up so there is no blood and lessens the pain.
Reply:Did you smoke or use a straw? either of those things can cause dry sockets. and that is what it sounds like you have. either way i would call the dentist IMMEDIATELY. not monday not tomrrow. NOW. The fact that the pain and swelling has INCREASED is not a good sign. not to mention the hotness of your face. Id play it safe and call him now!

(dry sockets hurt awful, been there done that)
Reply:I just got mine out a couple of months ago and it was bad, but not that bad! Make sure you do hot packs too if they said to, and take your vicadin! It really sounds to me that you need to go see your oral surgeon just to make sure because that much bleeding seems like too much!!
Reply:i am very surprised that they removed them all at one time usually they only want to remove 1 at a time. for the pain i suggest getting some 101 proof wild turkey whiskey soaking a gauze pad in it and just setting it back there and it will numb your gums so you do not feel the pain you will have to keep repeating this . i did this and it was the only thing that helped me. and get in touch with your doctor right away if you cannot reach him/her go to the emergency room at the hospital
Reply:Relax so your blood will stop pumping. Take some 800 mg motrin to take the swelling down. If you have tylenol codine that would be good too. Gargle with warm salt water and after peroxide if you're worried about infection. Make some mashed potatoes and chiken soup and mix it together in a blender and take a straw that goes all the way to the very back of your throat and drink that way and try to keep your mouth as closed as possible while sucking. Take the meds on a regular schedule like every 6 hours or as needed but make sure you have put something on your stomach prior to the motrin. blend, blend, blend, and try to sleep as much as possible try watching a whole bunch of movies and just relaxing, if you have to take a unisom (not the gels they give you a hang over). If the swelling, pain, and bleeding do not cease after two days go back something is seriously wrong. It should slow down and your blood will thin with the motrin and when you relax and get something in your stomach you should see an improvement of some sort (slowing down of blood) pain lessening in it's intensity over the next day 1/2. Blessings to you I've been there myself and had the same scare. Be sure to keep your gauze fresh and clean and changed and pact real good once it's changed.

BLESSINGS TO YOU FOR A SWIFT RECOVERY IN THE MIGHTY NAME OF JESUS!!! I CLAIM THIS FOR YOU!!! AMEN.
Reply:you should be on pain meds..take them thats why they gave them some antibiotics and a mouth rinser...follow your instructions...for the bleeding you can actually get a tea bag and wet it and put two in your mouth one on each side helps with the clotting..do not use a straw...drink clear juices stay away from any thing red...jello or drinks....you need to know if you are bleeding or if its something you eat or drink...if you do not feel better tomorrow...call your dentist..has he called you yet to see how you are doing?you need to continue with the icing and the heat on your face again should be in your instructions..i just went thru this in jan with my son he only had two there werent any more and they cut them out....i was more freaked and stayed on top of his healing the entire week until he could go back to school than he was..i also had to deal with my own being pulled and when my husband had his cut out all four at once..best thing you can do is prop up some pillows and chill out read a book or watch tv...
Reply:Go to urgent care, now, and get put on antibiotics. This sounds like a bad infection.

Try to avoid sugary foods (like pudding) since it's not good for the immune system to fight off infection. Try some low cal protein shakes or baby food.

Go the the dentist ASAP so he can inspect for dry socket.

Get well soon! best of luck.
Reply:YOU NEED TO CALL YOUR DENTIST IF YOU ARE STILL BLEEDING AND YOU ARE IN PAIN IF YOU FOLLOWED ALL OF YOUR POST OP INSTRUCTIONS YOU SHOULD NOT BE HAVING THESE SYMPTOMS CALL YOUR DR
