Does grinding your teeth lead to tooth pain? Why?

I recently went to the dentist and he found two cavities. They weren%26#039;t, however, in the teeth that were bothering me when I went in. I%26#039;m having pain in the left side of my mouth. I%26#039;ve recently acquired the nasty habit of grinding my teeth. Could this possibly be what%26#039;s making my teeth hurt? Any suggestions on how to stop? (I know that%26#039;s alot of questions; thanks in advance.)

The grinding of teeth causes pain because:


1) it chips tiny little pieces of tooth off and that makes the tooth more sensitive.


2) it puts little microscopic cracks into the tooth and that makes the tooth more sensitive.


3) it %26quot;rocks%26quot; the tooth back and forth in it%26#039;s socket. This really irritates the nerve coming out the end of the tooth and also irritates the tissue holding the tooth in place.





So, go to your dentist and have a night guard made. It should be smooth and hard. It won%26#039;t keep you from grinding, but will keep you from doing damage. DO NOT buy one at the drugstore. They are soft. The teeth do not slide easily. They do not stop damage to the teeth, AND they cause damage to the TMJ, (temporal mandibular joint), and you do not want to go there! If you damage your TMJ you are in for a lifetime of problems!!

Reply:Yes, a mouth guard from the drugstore or from ur dentist. It stops the teeth from making contact. Grinding chips, wears down ur teeth and moves ur teeth, causing damage. U hurt because u are exerting so much energy rubbing ur teeth back and forth during the night that ur jaw muscles are sore. Get a mouthguard. It%26#039;ll stop the friction and plus May retrain urself to stop.
