I have a permanent retainer that just broke yesterday, I'm experiencing a lot of pain from my teeth moving but I don't want to put the retainer back on because I don't want this to happen again if it were to break. How long can I expect to experience this pain from my teeth shifting? I had the retainer on for a couple years. I don't really care if my teeth have a gap, I just don't want to be in pain anymore.

You should probably get a new retainer. But for the meantime, you should just take a lot of advil or Ibuprofen. After 20 minutes it will really help with the pain.
